Let students finish in English
Students already studying Mathematics and Science in English should be allowed to continue without any disruption, said MCApresident Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek
Parents must also be given a choice in the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) issue, he added.
“The MCA’s stand on this issue is very clear. We believe the stakeholders must have a choice,” said Dr Chua.
However, he pressed on for clear directives from the Government on the matter.
“The MCA is of the view that there must be clear guidelines to end any confusion.”
He revealed that he, his deputy Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong had met Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, over the issue.
“We understand that while it is good to have the option to use English to teach Maths and Science, we are also briefed about the difficulty in implementing if the parents are given the choice,” he said.
Dr Chua gave suggestions to boost students’ standard of English in schools.
“The MCA wishes to propose that the Education Ministry introduces English Literature as a compulsory subject in schools to strengthen the command of English,” he said, adding there should be a special allowance for teachers who signed up to teach the subject in secondary schools.
“Retired teachers can also be hired. Many are still healthy and willing to contribute their skills.”
The PPSMI movement, spearheaded by Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE), handed a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Monday requesting that students be given the option to continue with the PPSMI.
Its chairman Datin Noor Azimah said PAGE was apolitical but was not afraid to let its voice be heard at the ballot box.
Muhyiddin over the weekend said the 2009 decision to abolish the PPSMI would be maintained.
