‘Himpun will be non-political’

The organisers of the Himpunan Sejuta Umat (Himpun) at the Shah Alam Stadium today have given the assurance that the event will be non-political.

Himpun secretariat joint chairman Dr Yusri Mohamad said the event was expected to draw about 100,000 people.

He added that busloads of participants from as far as Perlis, Terengganu and Kelantan would be arriving today.

“The response has been overwhelming based on the feedback that we got from the 1,000 organisations that have joined us to highlight the concern of Muslims over the issue of apostasy,” he said yesterday.

Dr Yusri added that the police had advised the organisers to ensure there was no provocation and obstruction to traffic.

“The authorities also told us to stick to the stipulated time,” he said, adding that the event was slated from 2pm to 6pm.

He also said participants were welcomed to enter the stadium earlier to perform Zohor prayers.

Dr Yusri stressed that participants were forbidden from bringing any political party flag or banner.

“This is a non-political event. We do not want any quarter exploiting the event to fan political sentiments.”

He said among the programmes lined up were nasyid, ceramah, poetry recital, munajat prayers and the recitation of the Himpun declaration.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had said civil servants were allowed to attend the gathering as long as it was not done during office hours.

PAS has indicated that it would not attend the event but allowed its members to attend the function in their personal capacity.
