Budget to tackle rising costs

The government is to announce some “good news” in Budget 2012 to tackle the rising cost of living.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he had attended various meetings regarding the matter.

“There will be something quite good to reduce the cost of living which will be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.”
Muhyiddin, who chairs the committee in charge of the new National Key Result Area on rising cost of living, said the issue had always been harped on by opposition parties but the government preferred to focus on workable solutions.

“Some people say BN stands for ‘Barang Naik’ (rising cost of goods). But to be fair, we are not responsible for rising costs as the government is not a business. At the same time, traders are not simply raising prices at their whims and fancies.

“The government is aware of the rising cost of living and if we do not take action, there will be repercussions.”
Muhyiddin said the government was putting in place measures to address the economic problems faced by the people.

However, he said the opposition often made an issue of these measures.

He was speaking at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri function organised by Pontian Barisan Nasional in Benut, near here.
Present were Pontian member of parliament Datuk Ahmad Maslan, state assembly speaker Datuk Ali Hassan and Pontian Umno chief Datuk Husni Mohammad.
