Several hurt in PAS-Perkasa scuffle at Hari Raya do
Several people were hurt when a scuffle broke out between members of PAS and Malay rights group Perkasa at a Hari Raya gathering attended by PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
Some 100 Perkasa members had begun gathering near the Ampangan mosque at about 8.30pm on Saturday when Perkasa members learnt that Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, had arrived to deliver a speech at the PAS-organised event.
The incident happened at about 10.15pm when Mat Sabu was about to deliver his speech.
A small group believed to be Perkasa members began moving forward to the stage where Mat Sabu was standing, prompting several PAS supporters to block them.
This led to a shoving match with PAS claiming two of its members were punched.
Stones and water bottles were also thrown towards the stage in the ensuing melee.
However, Mat Sabu managed to continue his speech without incident.
It is learnt that the Perkasa members had wanted to hand over a memorandum to Mat Sabu over his recent remarks regarding the Bukit Kepong tragedy.
It is understood that several PAS members lodged police reports over the incident.
State Perkasa secretary Alias Mohamed, who was present during the incident, said the members were merely protesting against Mat Sabu’s remarks over the Bukit Kepong incident.
“We just want him to apologise for the remarks that he had made. The situation went out of control as we were stopped by PAS members,” he claimed.
Seremban OCPD ACP Saiful Azly Kamarudin said more policemen were brought into the area when the situation became tense.
“We managed to disperse the crowd and prevent the situation from getting out of hand,” he said, adding that the matter was being investigated.
