Najib: Christians not challenging Constitution’s provisions

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Christian leaders in the country respected the position of Islam as the official religion and were not challenging the provision enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

The Prime Minister said the leaders had given their undertaking to cooperate in nurturing peace and harmony between the various faiths so the country would continue to be peaceful and prosperous.

“I am glad to say that Christian leaders have given two very important and meaningful undertakings,” he told Bernama after attending a luncheon with the Christian leaders, led by Malaysian Christian Federation chairman Bishop Ng Moon Hing at the Prime Minister’s Office here yesterday.

Also present were Ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Datuk Seri Idris Jala.

At the meet, Najib emphasised that the Government needed time to study several views presented and problems faced by the Christian community.

“It’s not the intention of both parties, the Government or Christian leaders, to highlight these matters openly until they have been amicably resolved.”

Asked about the reaction of the Christian group on the controversy involving them, Najib said they felt uneasy over the news published by the media.

Ng reiterated that the Christian community always respected Islam as the main religion of the federation, stressing that this had never been challenged.

“We want our own space to worship according to our own religion.

“That is all.

“There is no such thing as us wanting to usurp anything or challenge anybody,” he said after the meeting.
